Guitar Intervals, Relative Keys & Picking the Right Pentatonic Scale

If you've already got the minor pentatonic shape under your fingers, it's time to learn why those five notes work so well together. The key is intervals — measuring the distance between two notes in half steps. That one idea explains whether a chord is major or minor, why the A minor pentatonic shape works perfectly over a song in C major, and how to pick the right pentatonic scale for any song you're playing along to.

This lesson isn't about memorizing formulas — it's about building a sense of distance on the fretboard. Once "one fret equals one half step" clicks, everything else follows naturally.

🎯 Bottom line: An interval is the distance between two notes, measured in half steps (one fret each). A chord's skeleton is its root, 3rd, and 5th. What separates major from minor is the size of the 3rd — a major 3rd (4 half steps) gives you major, a minor 3rd (3 half steps) gives you minor. A minor pentatonic and C major share the exact same notes as relative keys, because a relative minor starts on the 6th degree of its major scale — and the 6th degree of C major is A. Once you know a song's key, picking a pentatonic is simple: use that key's minor pentatonic for a minor key, or that key's major pentatonic for a major key (which shares its notes with its relative minor pentatonic).

Step 1 · Interval Basics: Root, 3rd and 5th

An interval is the distance between two notes. On guitar, the most intuitive unit is the half step (semitone)one fret on a single string. A whole step (whole tone) is two half steps, or two frets.

A chord is built from three pillars:

Take a C major chord: its notes are C – E – G. C is the root, E is the 3rd, G is the 5th. From root to the perfect 5th (G) is 7 half steps — and that distance stays basically the same whether the chord is major or minor. In other words, the note that changes a chord's color isn't the 5th — it's the 3rd.

Step 2 · Major 3rd vs Minor 3rd: The One Half Step That Separates Major from Minor

There are two kinds of 3rds, and this difference decides the entire mood of a chord.

Just one half step of difference, but the sound is completely different. A bright, open sound is a major 3rd; a darker, more subdued sound is a minor 3rd.

A major chord's skeleton = major 3rd + minor 3rd. Root to 3rd is a major 3rd (4 half steps), 3rd to 5th is a minor 3rd (3 half steps) — together, root to 5th adds up to a perfect 5th (7 half steps).

Step 3 · Relative Keys: A Minor Pentatonic ≈ C Major

Think back to the A minor pentatonic (A – C – D – E – G) shape you already know. Surprisingly, those notes are exactly the same five notes as the C major pentatonic (C – D – E – G – A). Only the order — and which note feels like "home" — is different.

Two keys that share the same notes but have a different tonic like this are called relative keys.

The same relationship applies directly to pentatonic scales: A minor pentatonic = C major pentatonic — identical fretboard shape, with only the target note changing depending on which key the song is in.

Step 4 · Matching a Pentatonic Scale to a Song's Key

Now for the practical part. Once you know a song's key, picking the right pentatonic is straightforward.

Rule 1 · Minor key → use that key's minor pentatonic directly. Example: a song in A minor (Am) → play the A minor pentatonic shape you already know.

Rule 2 · Major key → use that key's major pentatonic. Example: a song in C major (C) → play the C major pentatonic. Thanks to the relative-key relationship, the C major pentatonic shares its notes with the A minor pentatonic — so you play the exact same shape as A minor pentatonic, but treat C as the note you're resolving to, and it reads as a major pentatonic.

Rule 3 · Don't know the key? → the note a song returns to most often, the one that feels "finished," is likely the tonic. If that note sounds bright, lean toward the major pentatonic; if it sounds dark, lean toward the minor pentatonic.
