About 90% of guitar solos are built from the pentatonic scale — which is exactly why it's the first scale most players learn. This guide covers what the pentatonic scale is, why it's the foundation of soloing, the 5 positions of the A minor pentatonic, its relationship to major, and how to connect the whole fretboard.
Penta = five — a five-note scale. It's a standard 7-note scale with the two notes most prone to clashing removed, so almost any note you play won't fight the chord underneath. The minor pentatonic is built from the root, minor 3rd, perfect 4th, perfect 5th and minor 7th (these are just names for the distance from the root — for now, just remember the five notes) — for A minor, that's A · C · D · E · G. That simplicity is exactly why beginners can start improvising and having fun with it almost immediately.
Start with the most commonly used Position 1. For A minor it usually starts at fret 5. First, get a feel for where the root (A) sits, then memorize the shape. It's much faster if you display the position on the fretboard tool while you practice.

🥁 Metronome → ✋ Picking practice →Once Position 1 feels natural, move through Positions 2, 3, 4 and 5 in order. Each box shares overlapping notes with its neighbor — use those shared notes as bridges to connect the shapes naturally.
Link all 5 positions along a single string so you can find the root anywhere on the neck and keep a solo going. Once you're here, you can improvise over any backing track.
The two share the exact same fretboard shape. The only difference is which note you feel as the root. A minor pentatonic and C major pentatonic are relative scales built from the same five notes — feel the root as A and you get a dark, driving minor sound; feel it as C and you get a bright major sound. In other words, learning one box shape gets you two scales at once.
Pentatonic boxes are movable. Keep the box shape exactly as it is and just slide the frets so the 6th-string root lands on the note you want — that gives you the pentatonic for that key. For example, C minor pentatonic is just Box 1 slid up so the 6th-string root sits on C (fret 8) — the exact same shape as A minor Box 1, moved up 3 frets.
The lowest possible position is the open strings (fret 0). There, the open 6th string E is the root, which makes Box 1 the E minor pentatonic. As the key rises a half-step at a time, Box 1 slides up one fret at a time too — F minor = fret 1, G minor = fret 3, A minor = fret 5, C minor = fret 8, and so on.
And as Box 1 climbs higher, Box 5, 4, 3 and so on trail in below it at progressively lower frets. That's why, in A minor (Box 1 = fret 5), you see Box 5 sitting in frets 2–5 just below it. Shift the key, and all 5 boxes shift together.
The major pentatonic uses the exact same fretboard shape as the minor. The only difference is which note you feel as the root. Keep A minor pentatonic (Box 1) exactly as it is, but feel C as the root instead, and you get C major pentatonic (A minor and C major are relative keys). Below is that same Box 1, with the root relabeled as C.
The frets just below Box 1 (fret 5) — frets 2 through 5 — also form a complete box. That's because the 5 shapes repeat every 12 frets, so what you see there is Box 5, connecting in right beneath Box 1. It shares its root with Box 1 at the 6th string, fret 5.
The shape and number of each box are fixed, but which box appears at the very bottom of the neck (lowest fret) depends on the key — the order simply rotates. Listed from lowest to highest fret:

Practicing in C minor, for example, the lowest box on the neck isn't Box 1 — it's Box 3 (around fret 1). Box 1 (with its 6th-string root on C) sits up at fret 8. So Box 1 is only "the lowest box" in E minor (since the open 6th string E is the root, at fret 0). Every other key has a different-numbered box sitting lower than Box 1.
